Purpose and Goals
Purpose and goal are often used interchangeably, but they represent different concepts.
Purpose
-
Long-term vision: Purpose is a broader, more overarching concept that defines your reason for being or existing. Meaning and impact: It’s about making a difference, contributing to something larger than yourself.
-
Values-driven: Purpose is deeply rooted in your personal values and beliefs. Guiding principle: It serves as a compass for your life or career.
Example: Your purpose might be to “make a positive impact on the environment.”
Goal
- Specific outcome: A goal is a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objective.
- Short-term focus: Goals are typically more immediate and actionable compared to purpose.
- Steps toward purpose: Goals are the milestones you set to achieve your overall purpose.
Example: A goal to achieve your purpose of “making a positive impact on the environment” could be “to reduce your carbon footprint by 20% in the next year.”
In essence:
- Purpose is the why - your underlying reason for doing something.
- Goal is the how - the specific steps you take to achieve your purpose.
Your purpose is your guiding star, while your goals are the steps you take to reach it.
